Kahiki 3 and Me Documentary
In 1975 there was an infamous event in Columbus, OH that would later become known as the Kahiki incident, where a bill dispute at a restaurant led to a brutal encounter with the police, resulting in arrests and severe injuries.
Many decades later, I received a copy of Columbus Monthly Magazine in the mail from my stepmother. My stomach turned when I first saw my uncle, mother, and father's bruised and swollen faces in the pages of the magazine.
I found out that day that my family were the victims of that encounter with the Columbus police that sparked outrage and calls for police and political reform.
My family rarely spoke about this event and were vague on the details, so it was a complete shock to me to read the story.
Here's the plot twist: As I read on, I discovered a 9-month-old baby was there with them when this happened. THAT BABY WAS ME.
I had to uncover the truth and took a leap by documenting my journey to find out what happened to them...and me.
I have struggled to heal from my brother's suicide and our childhood experiences of homelessness, poverty, and pain. Why did we have to endure so much?
I decided in 2023 that I was going to discover not only what happened to them on that long-forgotten night but to also share my family's story of the long-term effects of poverty, generational trauma, and police brutality. Hopefully, I can find peace on this journey.
"The Kahiki 3 and Me," a featured documentary, is coming in 2025. The film is directed by Amber Monet and features Les Brown, a world-famous motivational speaker.
